You might be wondering, will the recent USPS changes affect my wedding invitations?
The answer is: most likely, but we’re here to help.
Timing and cost of first class mail.
WHAT IS FIRST CLASS MAIL?
First class mail is considered any letter/postcard/package up to 13 oz of weight. Standard wedding invitations sent in an envelope 5.5″x7.5” will most likely be considered first class mail, depending on weight.
It will now take 3-5 days (excluding Sundays) instead of the previous 2-3 days. This isn’t too big of a headache, since you are super organized and sending your invites with plenty of buffer time, right? 😉
Costs of postage did go up, but this is totally normal to keep up with inflation rates. Depending on the weight of your total invitation package or save-the-dates, costs now range from $0.58 (1 oz) – $3.56 (13 oz) per envelope.
Another time & cost aspect to consider is in regards to hand-calligraphed envelopes, wax seals, and handmade paper envelopes. These typically have to (and trust me, you want them to) go through a process at the post office called “hand-canceling”, meaning they will not be put through a machine reader, they have to be processed by hand. This is a good idea for a number of reasons — not damaging your gorgeous wax seals or envelopes, and not having those unsightly marks from the machine on the front of your envelopes. This process can incur an additional $0.30 charge per envelope, which you should account for in your budget.
Hand-canceled mail can also take additional time to arrive at its destination so be sure you have at least an extra week as a buffer.
